To complement the tranquility which is so typical of the region, many sports activities bring animation to the village of Avis. National mountain bike and rowing championships, the Extreme marathon, open waters swimming event, the Avis Master Trail and Triathlon competitions among others.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The Feira Franca (local market), the Medieval Fair, the Traveler’s Event, the Hot Air Balloon Festival, these are some of the events that the village of Avis has to offer.

MONUMENTS

Avis kept some of its architectural heritage that ensures the title of medieval village. In 1214, during King Afonso II’s reign, a castle had been built to install the Order of Avis beside the typical Alentejo houses with whitewashed walls in contrast with blue and yellow baseboards and window sills. Avis’ historic center keeps alive the legends that support the village's origins: ruins of St Benedict’s convent; City Hall building (former residence of the Masters of the Order of Avis); Mother Church, the Pillory and three of the original six towers of Avis castle (Queen's, St Anthony’s and St Roch’s towers); as well as several dolmens (Olival, Cumeada, Penedo da Moura and the megalithic complex of the Monte da Ordem).
